Google has launched a free version of its AI coding assistant, Gemini Code Assist, which offers very high usage caps. The tool, called Gemini Code Assist for Individuals, provides 180,000 code completions per month and 240 chat requests per day, significantly more than competing tools like GitHub Copilot. It integrates with popular coding environments such as VS Code and JetBrains, and is designed to help developers with tasks like fixing bugs, completing code sections, and explaining code. The tool uses a variant of Google's Gemini 2.0 AI model, optimized for coding applications.
