In Cambodia, a multi-billion dollar scam industry has emerged, with thousands of foreign workers forced to work as hostages for scam operations. The government has instilled USAID-backed programs, but have mainly ignored the major issue of the migrants lured into the scam operations with the promise of jobs. Migrants from Indonesia, Uganda, Ghana, and Sierra Leone recount stories of human trafficking in scam centers alike to the Cambodian scam industry. In recent months, scam kingpins in Cambodia have been extradited and several tycoons collapsed, leading to tens of thousands of migrants released and struggling to return home. The Cambodian authorities have charged the migrants with visa violations, pushing them into overcrowded detention facilities as they wait for their foreign embassies to work with the Cambodian government.
