Illinois recently signed an important first of its kind piece of legislation into law known as the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act. This measure is a state-level law that establishes a new governance over AI, requiring public safety frameworks, incident reporting timelines, and a mandate for annual third party safety audits. This new law specifically affects large AI developers with annual gross revenues of more than $500 million, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, who train models on massive computational scales, and before this law faced little regulation. This shift matters because it sets a new precedent for AI governance and creates a standard across US tech hubs. Right now, major tech developers are cooperating with this state level law, but the difficulty in administering this change on a large scale is calling for a unified federal law.
