Insurance Company Faces Biggest Data Breach of the Year

Insurance provider AssuranceAmerica confirmed a huge data breach that hit almost 7 million people, making it the largest known theft of driver license information in the US this year. The breach was found on March 17 and they confirmed that the stolen data included names, contact details, driver's license numbers, and specific details involving auto insurance policies, vehicles, and claims. They have not come out with the exact method hackers used to attack their system or whether or not a ransom was paid, but they did say it involved an employee's compromised credentials. This incident adds to a recent surge in breaches involving government-issued identity documents, occurring as more websites and apps increasingly demand such verification for age checks.
