Recently, famous cybercriminal group ShinyHunters targeted Oracle PeopleSoft, a business management system, stealing 3 TB of data. In this attack, the hacker group was able to take advantage of a software flaw to gain unauthorized access to a company's computer network. The attackers send a corrupted file over the network, to which the server running commands with administrator level access. By using code snippets directly from Oracle's code, security filters failed to see the remote code execution which discreetly stole large amounts of sensitive company data. This severely impacts businesses by breaking the digital connections between their apps and servers, crashing online services as they are vulnerable to DDOS attacks, leaking or erasing database info, and locking employees and customers out of their accounts. To address this, organizations should verify incoming digital requests to block weird or unexpected files, disallow too many requests, and use automated monitoring tools to flag and shut down suspicious activity.
