WhatsApp discovered that there were approximately 200 users who were tricked into downloading a fake version of the app on iOS. Instead, they installed a malicious spyware created by SIO, an Italian spyware maker who was also behind various Android apps containing government spyware. In response, WhatsApp has notified the impacted users of their security risk, logged them out, and redirected them to download the official WhatsApp app. They also announced their plans to send formal legal demands against SIO.
